General Information
Soap got its name, according to an ancient Roman legend, from Mount Sapo, where animals were sacrificed. Rain washed a mixture of melted animal fat, or tallow, and wood ashes down into the clay soil along the Tiber River. Women found that this clay mixture made their wash cleaner with much less effort.
The ancient Germans and Gauls are also credited with discovering a substance called soap, made of tallow and ashes, that they used to tint their hair red.
Soap is made by combining lye, animal fats and/or vegetable oils and water in a process known as saponification. If the “soap” you are using does not have lye in it then it is not soap – it is either a beauty bar or detergent (synthetic).
I use a cold press method to make the soap. This means that the saponification process takes several days to complete, and glycerine, a natural by-product of saponification, remains in the finished soap.
Types of Soap
I make four specific type of soap – All vegetable, Emu Oil, Coco Butter and Goat Milk. All are made using the cold press method. They are mild, non-drying to the skin, have excellent lather, long lasting and will leave your skin feeling clean and soft. And will not go soggy in the soap dish. I use essential oils fragrance oils to scent my soap, natural dyes like paprika, turmeric and chilli powders and dyes made especially for soap. The soap dyes contain dye pigments, water and vegetable glycerine.
